Derby Destruction - Sydney FC Run Riot on Wanderers Darkest Night

It wasn't even close....

Sydney FC have inflicted a 5-0 derby rout to send Western Sydney to their worst A-League defeat in the club's history.
With Adrian Mierzejewski's brace and Alex Brosque's first goal of the season, the Wanderers, undefeated in the last three derbies, waved a sorry goodbye to their recent cross-city dominance at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

And that was before halftime.

Youngster Lachlan Scott was still to score an own goal and Brandon O'Neill to put the finishing touch on a lop-sided affair that sends Sydney eight points clear at the top and leaves Josep Gombau's side 17 points adrift in ninth.

Saturday night was a textbook walkover, and Adrian Mierzejewski did the walking. The Polish winger carried flair into every foray and flaunted his astute dead-ball skills before the 36,433 in attendance.
The Wanderers are now eight matches without a win in a drought stretching back to the opening round, their new coach still searching for a maiden triumph after four attempts.

The importance this match for Gombau was palpable in his early verbal shutdowns of assistant Hayden Foxe.
The Spaniard's selection choices made it rather less obvious.
With Oriol Riera leading the attacking injuries, Gombau opted for Scott up front instead of veteran Brendon Santalab, moved Josh Risdon to the wing and inserted 19-year-old Keanu Baccus into holding midfield.
By 14 minutes the makeshift line-up was suffering as Mierzejewski's left foot took care of Sydney's first goal after Vedran Janjetovic parried away David Carney's shot.

The Johnny Warren Medal contender's second was a thing of brilliance, winning a foul off Jack Clisby before curling the free-kick over the wall and out of Janjetovic's reach.
But not before Brosque missed two golden opportunities in quick succession, finally converting a third off a superb team goal featuring one-touch passes and a perfect ball from Bobo that allowed the skipper to skip around Janjetovic.
It was not to be Scott's night.
The 20-year-old, who had not played a previous minute this season, inexplicably skied the Wanderers' best first-half chance and then diverted Mierzejewski's cross into his own net before promptly being replaced by Santalab.

Soon after Michael Zullo was filthy the VAR disallowed his right-foot cracker for a Mierzejewski handball in the build-up.
Nevertheless the whitewash was on, and Janjetovic was called upon time and again, the last line of a defence so effortlessly carved open.
There was nothing he could do about O'Neill's left-field stunner from acres of space on the edge of the box.
Santalab leathered a speculative shot into the post, Jumpei Kusukami shot wide and Roly Bonevacia came close as the Wanderers hunted a consolation that would never come.

Sydney FC were near faultless in a frightening display of dominance that came without last years best player Milos Ninkovic. If it wasn't for Vedran Janjetovic's spectacular saves the FC total may very well have reached double figures. For Sydney FC fans it was the ultimate christmas present as they sent the Wanderers stuttering season into a crisis footing.

SYDNEY FC 5 (Adrian Mierzejewski 14m, 45m, Alex Brosque 41m, Lachlan Scott 53m og, Brandon O’Neill 76m) WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 0 at ANZ Stadium.

The Western Sydney Wanderers have missed out on an FFA Cup final birth against Sydney FC after an uninspiring 2-1 loss to a gritty Adelaide United outfit at Campbelltown Stadium.

In a performance that was a world away from the title contenders they have looked in the early weeks of the A-League season the Wanderers turned in a lethargic and disjointed performance that harkened back to the Wanderers woes of the first half of last season.
A 25 yard missile from Adelaide's Daniel Adlung was the difference between the two sides as the Reds booked a final showdown with Sydney FC on November 21st, it's United's second Cup final appearance after they claimed the inaugural competition in 2014.

It was a defensive error that gift wrapped the visitors the lead in the 12th minute when Jonathan Aspro failed to clear from the back, his miscue found Adelaide midfielder Johan Absolonson who calmly slotted the ball past Vedran Janjetovic.
The Wanderers were also lucky to not be a man down when Roly Bonevacia put his studs through Adelaide's Isaias yet was only given a yellow card, for his part Isaias got his revenge with a hard foul on Bonevacia moments later which put him in the book.
Jonathon Aspro was also lucky to stay on the pitch after earning a yellow card during a period where he conceded three fouls in a minute, likewise Jacob Melling who went in hard into a challenge on Jordan Elsey with the Adelaide defender left bruised in the aftermath yet only a foul was given.

The Wanderers had 13 shots to 8 yet only two were on target, one chance that went wide was in the 58th minute when Jack Clisby launched a ball into the six yard box yet Riera's goalscoring nous eluded him as he headed it wide from point blank range.
The Wanderers were gifted a lifeline in the 70th minute when Brendan Santalab converted a penalty after being fouled in the box by Isaias, but it was all to no avail as the Wanderers lacked the killer blow required and their FFA Cup derby final against Sydney FC went out the window.

This Sunday the Wanderers meet the Newcastle Jets in a W-League/A-League double header, catch both matches live and free on SWR Sport with the W-League live streamed on SWR Sport from 2:15pm and the A-League on SWR Sport and SWR Triple 9 (99.9FM) from 4:30pm.
