Kings Outlast Hawks To Score A Pressure Relieving Win

THE Sydney Kings have eased pressure on coach Andrew Gaze with a heart-stopping 99-94 overtime NBL victory over the Illawarra Hawks yesterday in Wollongong.
Losers of their previous two games by a combined 47 points, the Kings proved they can win without injured captain Kevin Lisch, boosting their season record to 2-4 while leaving the Hawks stranded at the bottom of the ladder on 1-5.
Import forward Perry Ellis had 22 points and guard Jason Cadee finished with 21 for the Kings, while AJ Ogilvy (22) and Rotnei Clarke (21) led the Hawks.

Cadee had a chance to seal the game in regulation time from the free throw line with the Kings leading 88-86 and only 30 seconds remaining.
Instead he missed both shots and then fouled Ogilvy on a scoring play under the basket which leveled the match at 88-all with a foul shot to come and just over two seconds on the clock.
This time it was the Hawks turn to choke with Ogilvy’s free throw off target to give sydney a second chance in overtime.
Gaze was clearly relieved afterwards but denied he’d been feeling the intense scrutiny caused by his team’s poor start.
“I didn’t feel under siege or that there was any pressure internally,” Gaze said. “When you’re not playing well you have to cop the criticism and roll with the punches.
To get a win here is great and it certainly helps morale, but we’ve got a long way to go.”

Illawarra coach Rob Beveridge was furious with his side’s 23 turnovers.
“We’ve got to a point where we’ve lost respect for the ball,” Beveridge said. “We’re very flippant at times and we’re struggling for consistency because we’re just not clicking.
“People will look at our record and write us off, but it’s a tough group of guys and I believe in them that they’ll stay together and continue to fight.”

Sparked by Clarke’s hot perimeter shooting, the Hawks were ahead 23-19 at quarter-time and stretched the margin to 10 early in the second period.
But Ellis scored nine points to keep the Kings in striking distance before Cadee flicked the switch with three straight three-point bombs to tie it at 43-all.
Sydney took advantage of the home team’s sloppy execution (10 turnovers) and built a 48-45 halftime lead, with Ellis and Cadee combining for 31 points.

Illawarra are away to Brisbane on Friday night, while the Kings face the league- leading Wildcats in Perth on Friday before hosting the Hawks on Sunday afternoon.

Catch all the action of the Sydney Kings and the Illawarra Hawks LIVE on SWR Sport this Sunday at 2:30pm from Qudos Bank Arena.

Wanderers Lose Their Way But Not The Match In Newcastle

For the second straight week the Wanderers let a lead slip as they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Newcastle Jets at Mcdonald Jones Stadium.

It was the classic game of two halves as the Wanderers put behind their mid-week FFA Cup disappointment to dictate the pace in the hot Newcastle conditions.
After 15 minutes Mark Bridge scored his first goal of his second Wanderers stint against the side he scored a Grand Final winner for in 2008, the ball found Bridge inside the D after a memorising Jumpei run ended with a deflected shot which fell into the direction of the former all time Wanderers leading goal scorer. He turned and put his foot through the ball giving it a wicked curve that left Newcastle keeper Jack Duncan no chance.

However after halftime the Wanderers faded out of the match for the second straight week as the Jets got a well deserved equaliser in the 67th minute through Dimi Petratos, a Roy O'Donovan rocket was well saved by Vedran Janjetovic but his parry fell straight to Petratos who slotted home the equaliser.

The Jets would fire many chances in the final 20 minutes of the game but it was only another classy performance bu Janjetovic that saved a point for the Red & Black.

The Jets lost star recruit Daniel Georgievski in the 12th minute due to a hamstring complaint while Chris Herd left the game in the 65th minute after a heavy collision with former Wanderers captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley

A Familiar Face Haunts The Wanderer Women In Newcastle

The Western Sydney Wanderers have gone down in their W-League season opener with a 2-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle.

In hot conditions which resulted in drinks breaks for the players midway through each half, it was the Wanderers leading goal scorer last season Katie Stengel who tapped the ball home on the quarter hour mark, which gave the hosts the advantage following a defensive error from the Wanderers.

The Wanderers would hit back with a brilliant equaliser with 15 mins to go, Erica Halloway finishing off with her head some super lead up play from Lo'eau La Bonta and Marlous Pieeta.

However, 60 seconds later another blunder by WSW keeper Trudy Burke - who came out for a floated free kick but missed her punch - gave Jenna Kingsley the easiest of headers to regain the lead and all three points for Newcastle.

Underwhelming Wanderers Miss FFA Cup Final

The Western Sydney Wanderers have missed out on an FFA Cup final birth against Sydney FC after an uninspiring 2-1 loss to a gritty Adelaide United outfit at Campbelltown Stadium.

In a performance that was a world away from the title contenders they have looked in the early weeks of the A-League season the Wanderers turned in a lethargic and disjointed performance that harkened back to the Wanderers woes of the first half of last season.
A 25 yard missile from Adelaide's Daniel Adlung was the difference between the two sides as the Reds booked a final showdown with Sydney FC on November 21st, it's United's second Cup final appearance after they claimed the inaugural competition in 2014.

It was a defensive error that gift wrapped the visitors the lead in the 12th minute when Jonathan Aspro failed to clear from the back, his miscue found Adelaide midfielder Johan Absolonson who calmly slotted the ball past Vedran Janjetovic.
The Wanderers were also lucky to not be a man down when Roly Bonevacia put his studs through Adelaide's Isaias yet was only given a yellow card, for his part Isaias got his revenge with a hard foul on Bonevacia moments later which put him in the book.
Jonathon Aspro was also lucky to stay on the pitch after earning a yellow card during a period where he conceded three fouls in a minute, likewise Jacob Melling who went in hard into a challenge on Jordan Elsey with the Adelaide defender left bruised in the aftermath yet only a foul was given.

The Wanderers had 13 shots to 8 yet only two were on target, one chance that went wide was in the 58th minute when Jack Clisby launched a ball into the six yard box yet Riera's goalscoring nous eluded him as he headed it wide from point blank range.
The Wanderers were gifted a lifeline in the 70th minute when Brendan Santalab converted a penalty after being fouled in the box by Isaias, but it was all to no avail as the Wanderers lacked the killer blow required and their FFA Cup derby final against Sydney FC went out the window.

This Sunday the Wanderers meet the Newcastle Jets in a W-League/A-League double header, catch both matches live and free on SWR Sport with the W-League live streamed on SWR Sport from 2:15pm and the A-League on SWR Sport and SWR Triple 9 (99.9FM) from 4:30pm.

Wanderers Survive Late SYdney FC Fightback for Derby Draw

22/10/2017

It had everything you could want in a Sydney Derby, goals, controversy and a boisterous atmosphere. But after 90 minutes the points were shared as Sydney FC and Western Sydney played out a pulsating 2-2 draw at Allianz Stadium.

It had a feeling of deja vu about it as it was almost three years to the day that the Sky Blues overturned a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 in the derby at Allianz, a game that really kicked off the Sydney FC dominance of the fixture that was to follow. But this time Matt Simon's moment to break Wanderers hearts was denied as his open header sailed wide of the posts in stoppage time, much to the relief of the Red and Black faithful.

Oriol Riera continued his blistering goalscoring pace be netting the opener after just two minutes before Brendon Hamill shocked the 34'810 in attendance by scoring his first A-League goal on the half hour mark.
A contentious penalty to David Carney was converted by Bobo in the 37th minute before Josh Brillante finished off a tremendous Milos Ninkovic run in the 61st minute to restore parity.

While the crowd may have been on the lighter side of recent derby attendances both teams gave those who did turn up another derby to remember, the next Derby is scheduled for December 9th at ANZ Stadium but it may come sooner as the sides will face off in the FFA Cup Final on November 21st if the Wanderers can get past Adelaide United in the semi final on Tuesday night at Campbelltown Stadium.

SYDNEY FC 2 (Bobo 39m pen, Joshua Brillante 61m) drew WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS 2 (Oriol Riera 3m, Brendan Hamill 30m) at Allianz Stadium. Crowd: 34,810. Referee: Jarred Gillett

Next week the Wanderers face the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle as part of an A-League/W-League double header, you can hear both matches live on SWR Sport from 2:15pm Sunday October 29th.
SWR Sport also has live coverage of Tuesday night's FFA Cup semi final between Western Sydney and Adelaide from 7pm at Campbelltown Stadium.

HAWKS COME FROM BEHIND IN FIERY CLASH WITH BRISBANE

On a day where the two NBL title favourites suffered shock losses, the Illawarra Hawks have broken through for their first win of the 2017/18 NBL season with a 105-96 win over the Brisbane Bullets at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong.

After Melbourne United lost at home to the New Zealand Breakers immediately prior and the Perth Wildcats being shocked by Cairns immediately after the Hawks came from behind to open their season account and keep in touch with the top sides in the NBL.

The Hawks started the game with an 11-5 run much to the delight of the electric home fans in Wollongong, they were soon silenced however as the Bullets went on a 17-2 march to lead by 15 at quarter time on the back of shooting 12/17 from the field.

The second quarter saw the Hawks cut the lead down to one before the Bullets shot away again to take a ten point lead into half time and put the Hawks season in serious trouble.

However the Hawks began to grab a toehold in the third. Rotnei Clarke was the standout for the Hawks coming into the starting place for Kevin White who was a late scratching due to illness, he was in the thick of the action with 26 points for the home side in what became at times a spiteful encounter.
Midway through the third quarter Hawks forward Nick Kay was fouled hard by Bullets guard Adam Gibson which in turn instigated a melee as both sides converged on the scene and started to square up to one another

Following a lengthy review by the officials, four players -- two from each side -- were hit with unsportsmanlike fouls, while Rotnei Clarke wore a technical foul.

From that point the Hawks were the better side finishing the third term with a flourish to complete a 39-16 quarter to lead by 13 at the final change. Despite the Bullets cutting the lead to 5 late on in the piece the Hawks held their nerve to record an important victory.

ILLAWARRA HAWKS 105 (Clarke 26, Conger 21, Ogilvy 15)
BRISBANE BULLETS 96 (Buford 26, Kickert 21, Holt 17)

The Sydney Kings have moved fast to cover for injured superstar Kevin Lisch by signing NBL All Australian Team player Jeremy Kindle.

Kendle was a part of the NBL All Australian Team that competed in a three game series against the Chinese national team in July, in the final game he was a standout performer sparking the NBL team to a 89-75 victory with a game-high 20 points.

The 188cm (6’2”) guard has been a standout at SEABL level for several years. He was named MVP in 2016 and led the Bendigo Braves to the SEABL title that same year, earning MVP honours in the Grand Final.

“We are very fortunate that Jeremy was available and ready to go,” Sydney Kings Managing Director Jeff Van Groningen commented.

“Through his play for Brisbane last season and with the All-Australian Team in China in the offseason, he’s proven that he's an NBL-calibre talent,”

Kindle is expected to suit up for tomorrow's rematch with the New Zealand Breakers in Auckland.

It's yet another setback for the former NBL MVP with a troublesome knee injury curtailing his first season with the Kings in 2016/17.
The Kings are currently weighing up the option to use their last remaining import spot in the roster to bring in a point guard to cover for Lisch during his recovery.
