Leprosy is a neglected tropical disease caused by bacteria. It rarely affects people in modern Australia, but it’s deeply interwoven with our world’s history. It has been uncovered in skeletons over 4000 years old, and recorded in ancient texts that date back to 600 BCE. However, Leprosy still exits.
Did you know that every 2 minutes, a person is diagnosed with leprosy? For people affected by leprosy, the battle isn't only against the disease, it is also against the despair of being rejected by their community.
Help to stop the pain of rejection for people affected by leprosy this World Leprosy Day (or hold your own). Your support will help with early diagnosis and treatment of leprosy and help stop it from leading to nerve damage, ulcers and permanent disability. And provide community education to end the stigma.
