Cumberland is set to get a city status and Cumberland Council will be renamed ‘Cumberland City Council’. It follows a recent Council meeting that supported a mayoral minute recommending Council change its name with the Australian Business Registration Service.

Mayor Steve Christou has welcomed the development.

“When our Council was established in 2016, one important detail was overlooked - we were named Cumberland Council instead of Cumberland City Council,” he said. “Cumberland already has the characteristics of a great city. We are the fifth largest Council in NSW and we are home to a growing population of around 240,000 residents. “As a city, we’re contributing significantly to the regional economy and new opportunities are on the horizon for industry, culture and city planning.“This name change will strengthen our position as a Council but also how others see us, including the business community.“We’re finally getting the recognition we deserve and I couldn't be prouder.”

Council expects to register the trading name of ‘Cumberland City Council’ with the Australian Business Registration Service in the next month.

The Cumberland Local Government Area (LGA) is located in Sydney’s western suburbs, about 25 kilometres from the CBD and close to the geographic heart of Sydney.
